    Située dans le désert de Namib, cette ville a été fondée par les Allemands en 1908. Grâce à l'exploitation d'un gisement diamantifère, elle a connu une ascension fulgurante. A son apogée, elle comptait un casino, une école, un hôpital et des bâtiments résidentiels. Après 1919, la chute du cours du diamant a entraîné sa petite mort jusqu'en 1950. Depuis, le sable de la Namibie reprend ses droits.
